Copying Ephesian denarii of Vespasian and his sons
Lot 168
MOESIA INFERIOR. Tomis. Vespasian, with Titus and Domitian as Caesars, 69-79. Assarion (Bronze, 19 mm, 5.19 g, 3 h), 70-79. ΚΑΙϹΑΡ ΟΥЄϹΠΑϹΙΑΝΟϹ / ΤΟΜΙ Laureate head of Vespasian to right. Rev. ΤΙΤΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ ΔΟΜΙΤΙΑΝΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ Bare heads of Titus, on the left, and Domitian, on the right, facing one another. AMNG I, 2, 2590. RPC I 402. Varbanov 4642. Rare and in exceptional condition for the issue, with a lovely lime green patina. Light doubling and with a minor deposit on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

Stylistic comparison reveals that this interesting Provincial dynastic issue was directly copied from an Ephesian denarius of Vespasian with his sons, struck in 70 AD (e.g. Leu 12 (2022), 1074).
